There are 4 Indian tribes we are studying in this unit. They are Paleo, Archaic, Woodland, and Mississippian. I will be discussing what their lives were like before the Europeans.
First I am talking about is the Paleo Tribe. They were sometimes called the Clovis Indians. They were the first people to come to America. They came to the United States about 10,000 or 40,000 years ago. Archeologists theory was they were nomadic people and they mostly hunted and gathered food. They have the credit for making the Atlatl. Which was a spear with a handle that was easier to throw. Here is a picture of the Paleo Indians.
Now I will be talking about the Archaic Indians. They developed from the Paleo Indians and they started agriculture. They were here approximately 8,000-2,000 bc. They have very many food choices based off the availability. They have found some food remains of where they were growing their food. They also created a lot of tools Americans have never seen or heard of.
Next I will be talking about the Woodland Indians. Their period is from 1000 B.C. to A.D. 900. Ceramic cooking tools were created during this time. Pots were ten times more decorated than the other periods. Also their settling periods were more permanent than the other periods were.
Last but not least I will be talking about the Mississippian Indians. Their period was from A.D. 800 to 1600. These Indians were horticulturalists. That means that grew majority of their food. Most of the time they were outdoors. They only used their houses for sleeping and bad weather. In their houses they left a small hole in the top of the ceiling so smoke could go through and not burn down the house. Also they built walls and moats around the villages to keep intruders out.
